The Oxford English Dictionary is a dictionary of the English language, published by the Oxford University Press. According to The Guinness Book of World Records the Oxford English Dictionary is the longest official dictionary. Even though it is the longest it is not the earliest or largest dictionary. The largest dictionary is the Dutch dictionary Wooordenboek de Nederlandsche Taal, and the earliest dictionary is the Kangxi dictionary of Chinese.
Contrary to popular belief the dictionary did not originate from Oxford University. The idea actually came about by a group of intellectuals in London called The Philological Society. They were dissatisfied with the current English dictionaries that were available and wanted to search for undefined words that were not currently present in the dictionaries. In the 1879 Oxford University Press agreed to publish the dictionary created by The Philological Society. A free download oxford dictionary 7th edition audio can be found at Brothersoft.com
